Tips for Installing Pavers and Patio Stones

  • Make sure utilities have been marked and /or OUPS has been called
  • Layout from plan and determine grades
  • Layout should be 6” larger to extend base material for edging
  • Begin excavation, prepare site for a minimum of 6” of base material.
  • Tamp all subgrades - make sure there are no soft spots
  • Base material should be brought to 3 - 3 1/2” below finish grade of brick and power tamped
  • Begin laying pavers and cut in
  • Install paver edging
  • A fine dry sand should be swept into brick joints- Make sure there are no chips, rocks, or stones on the surface before going further
  • Power tamp pavers to set them into the bed of sand
  • Sweep final coat of fine sand into brick joints
  • Make sure soil is back filled to edges
  • Backfill edges with soil to protect edging from eroding

Tips for installing a Retaining Wall

  • Make sure utilities have been marked and /or OUPS has been called
  • Inspect and evaluate the site conditions and backfill
  • Layout from your plan
  • Determine lowest elevation (starting point of wall)
  • Excavate a trench at location of wall.  The trench should be deep enough for a layer of gravel and the amount of base block below grade.  Trench should be wide enough for a drainpipe behind wall.  Use Jumping jack to compact the sub-grade.
  • Bury 1” of base block for each foot of wall height
  • Begin placing block on layer of gravel, check for proper level from side to side and have the back of the block slightly lower than front to help prevent wall from pushing forward
  • Base course of block should be backfilled with gravel to prevent from moving
  • Begin stacking the wall making sure to offset the joints and backfill every 2 courses
  • Depending on wall height, a geo-grid tie-in may be needed
  • Use adhesive on cap row
