Winter Checklist
November 6, 2011
Winter is on its way. To help you out, we have put together a winter check list to get you started.
- Prune with purpose – If weather permits early in the season, prune deciduous trees and shrubs when branches are visible. Also apply Espoma Tree-Tone or Plant-Tone while they’re dormant. Before you put your clippers away, lightly prune evergreen trees and shrubs and enjoy the fragrance in fresh-cut (no cost!) indoor arrangements.
- Add an extra blanket of mulch – Shrubs, roses and perennials that stand up to winter’s icy blasts have a head start with a fresh, insulating layer of Rice’s Premium Double Ground or Triple Ground Black Sable Mulch.
- Keep greens fresh – Protect your indoor greens, garlands, ropes and wreaths from drying and needle drop with a mist of Bonide Wilt Stop. It works well on cut holly and boxwood, too.
- Start your indoor bulbs – Force indoor amaryllis and paperwhite bulbs in mid-lat November and you’re likely to have blooms by Christmas! Plant them in fun, colorful containers (which are 40% right now!) for a little treat in the meantime.
- Perk up you houseplants – Add Schultz’s 10-15-10 Plant Food to houseplants, and poinsettia (after they are done blooming) to keep them looking perky and fresh.
- Just ask! – For emerging garden challenges, questions, and help along the way, just stop by or give us a call at 330-499-9622 or visit us at www.ricesnursery.com for friendly, expert advice.
