The We Plan... You Plant landscape design solution was created to help you install a professionally looking landscape. This solution concentrates on one area at a time, so that we may give special attention to that site. It's important to pay attention to details as you draw the specific area to be designed. The more accurate you are with details and measurements, the better job we can do designing.
Your answers to the questions asked are the first step in helping create the landscape you want. Please set aside sufficient time to carefully respond to each of the questions.Attach any additional sheets as necessary, and photographs where indicated.
Fee: There is a $75 fee for this service (designing for one specific area of your landscape). In return you will receive a $25 off a purchase of $100 or more of plant material, in addition to your landscape drawings. After you have completed the questionnaire, return it to our Garden Center along with the payment of $75. Please allow up to two weeks for us to complete your design. When it is completed, we will contact you and go over the plan.
NEW this year to our We Plan You Plant program is photo rendering. For an additional $25 we can provide a photo of what your new landscape will look like. This can be added to the package or done seperately if the plan is not desired. Pictures can be emailed to smaddox@ricesnursery.com, dropped off on a CD or brought in via memory stick. (IE SD Card, Sony Memory Stick, etc.)

Winter Burn on Trees and Shrubs

Now is the time to be on the lookout for winter burn on your evergreens. The most common is brown needles or leaves on your trees or shrubs next to roadways. Typically, this is caused by salt spray that causes the areas affected to turn brown. The water inside the needles or leaves moves out to dilute the salts that accumulate on the tissue. This lack of water causes the tissue to die, and turn brown or fall off.
The second most common winter burn that occurs away from roads, is general lack of water. When the ground is frozen, water is no longer able to penetrate the soil. Therefore, the only water the plant has is what is remaining in the leaves. When the sun comes out and the water is used up, the tissues dry out and turn brown. Wind will also help dry out the needles or leaves, which can exacerbate the problem.
Other types of winter injury are frost cracks in the bark and bud injury. If you discover any of the before mentioned problems, please come in and see us so that we can help you prevent it next year. In some cases patience is the best remedy, but consult with one of our sales professionals to be sure.

When Do I Start My Seeds?

Starting your seeds at the right time is an important consideration to insure your garden grows and produces your plants and vegetables at the right time of the season.

When purchasing your seed packs, be sure to read the back labels. This will help you determine the proper time to plant so that the maturity of the vegetables will be at its peak time.

Most seeds that will be planted outside in the ground should be planted after May 15th to avoid the last frost. However, you may start your seeds inside to get a head start. Great seeds to start inside are tomatos and peppers.

To figure out when to start, you need to see how many days it takes for the seed to germinate and how long it takes to grow to maturity. If your seed takes 80 days to grow to maturity and you would like to start having tomatoes by June 30th you will need to count the days backwards to determine when to plant your seeds. This should include the 10 days to germinate and the 80 days to maturity. That makes a total of 90 days to maturity. You will need to start your seeds on April 1st!

End the Battle of Tomato Blossom-end Rot!

Tomato blossom-end rot is causes by calcium deficiency in the tomato from too much nitrogen fertilizer to the tomato plant. End rot is a brown, round sunken area at the bottom of the tomato. The tomato will ripen this area will turn dry and leathery. It most likely will happen when there is a rapid growth with a dry condition or even if there is a period of heavy rain which causes the calcium to leave the soil.

Bonide Rot-Stop is easy to apply. Simply spray the ready to use Rot-Stop on the fruit to the point of run-off onto the foliage during the rapid growth periods or following heavy rains. The best time to spray is early morning or evening when the temperatures are at the lowest of the day. Spray fruit every 5-7 days when the conditions are best for this disorder.

Capture the Beauty of the Humming Birds

What could be better than sitting on your deck watching the dance of the Hummingbird? There is beauty watching a hummingbird suspended in air as it sips nectar from a plant or a feeder.

The Par-A-Sol Hummingbird Feeders are hand blown in vibrant colors of recycled glass. They posses beautiful etched patterns of graceful hummingbirds that are feeding from sweeping floral vines. A must see!

We offer a wide selection of Hummingbird Feeders this Spring. The beauty of the feeders will match the beauty of their dance

The Audubon Society suggest the Hummingbirds return to this area mid April and will stay till July when they migrate south for the winter.

A few pointers to help get you feeder noticed:

Place it in a good place for the feeder to be seen by the Hummingbirds. You can move it to a different place after they start coming.

A shady location is best. This will help your food to stay fresh and will discourage bees. To discourage ants, slather petroleum jelly on the pole.

Hummingbirds tend to be more aggressive if only a few birds come to feed. It is helpful to separate feeders about 30 feet apart or hide them from each other.

Clean feeder every 3 days in the hot weather and 7 days in the cooler weather. Hummingbirds do not like "old" solution and will reject it.

We carry Hummingbird Food for your convenience (no boiling needed!) or you can make your own by just combining 1 part white sugar to 4 parts water. Bring to a slow boil for 2 minutes. Cool before pouring into feeder. Extra food may be stored in the refrigerator (Do not freeze). Never use honey or artificial sweeteners!

For more information about plants that attract Hummingbirds, we put together a list of perennials that we will have at the Nursery this season. Be watching for our notice that they have arrived!

Beginners Vegetable Gardening

Beginners Vegetable Gardening

Spring has sprung! Now is the time to think about starting your vegetable garden. There are several things for you to consider when starting your first vegetable garden.
The size of your garden is very important. First time gardeners may not want to start out too large. A good starting point may be a pot on your patio, an area along the border of you flower garden, hanging containers on fence or even a trellis.
Consider the location of your garden. Keep your garden close to a water source. This will ultimately save time when watering. You will also want a level area that will get at least 6-8 hours of sun daily.
Several tools will come in handy when starting your vegetable garden. The Garden Weasel is wonderful tool to help cultivate the soil. Other tools you may want to consider are a shovel, rake, hoe, hand rake and hand shovel. If animals are a problem in your area, you may want to consider you may consider a small fence or barrier.
You need to prepare the area by removing all grass and weeds. Dig to a depth of 12-15' and work in soil amendments like Sweet Peat, Growers Secret, Nature's Richest Topsoil, manure, compost. Loosely rake the soil smooth then mark your rows for seeds and plants.
You may want to start tomatoes, peppers and cantaloupe indoors by seed the first part of April. For your cool weather crops such as lettuce, cabbage and broccoli you can plant seeds in early May. Be sure to add a scoop of Root Blast to the hole with your seeds to help promote rapid root growth. When the soil warms and danger of frost is past, (about May 30th) seeds like carrots, beets, corn and beans can be planted. Be sure to water them in well.
Add your fertilizer about two weeks after planting. We carry organic fertilizers like Garden-Tone, Osmocote, Tomato Blast or Plant-Tone to feed your growing plants.
Some maintenance will be required. To cut down on weeds, you can use Corn Gluten as an organic weed preventer. Corn Gluten helps prevent seeds from germinating. This works well after your plants have started growing.
You will also need regular watering through out the season and especially when its dry and the plants are larger. Plants like 1" of water per week. Stake tomatoes and peppers before they get too large to keep the stems from falling over. Mulching will help keep weeds under control and will keep soil from splashing up on the plants.
Findeing and identifying pests and insects before an infestation occurs is critical.. Hand pick to remove insects or use controls like Bonide Tomato &amp Vegetable 3 in 1 Insecticide, Fungicide &amp Miticide. We also carry Bonide Garden Dust which is a ready to use Insecticide-fungicide dust you can use on your vegetables.
Vegetable gardening offers many rewards. Home grown veggies not only taste better, but are healthier for you to eat!

Top 6 Reason To Skip the Superstore

Top 6 reasons to skip the superstore

Don't get us wrong: we live in the hardware aisle and love the smell of fresh lumber. But superstores are super because they pack their shelves with everything imaginable form everywhere imaginable. Which is great if you're searching for a power tool or a two-by-four, but not so great when you're interested in fresh, beautiful plants and the answers to keep them that way. Here's why coming to Rice's is the real deal:

· It's local! When you buy from Rice's you're buying from local growers. Less fuel to transport, a shorter journey for your trees and plants, healthier plants.
· It's handpicked! Superstores take as much inventory as possible because they only pay for what they sell. We visit our growers (or in many cases, grow on our very own tree farm) and handpick the finest plants for our customers.
· More help! Ask us how to plant, where to plant, why planting where you did doesn't seem to be working. What that white scaly stuff is on you leaves, how and when to use those fancy new pruning sheers, what type of ground cover would work best around you stepping stones. Simple (and pie-in-the-sky) plans to transform your yard, and free workshops to help you become the yard and garden guru you always knew you could be.
· A face with the name! Shake the hand of someone who has a stake in the success of you yard and garden-today and two years from now. We love what we do!
· More little extras! Free workshops and snapshot gardening consultations. Phone in your birdseed order and we'll meet you at the curb-you don't even have to get out of your car. Customers appreciation events. Refreshments while you browse. Smiles!
· You'll love it! Who wants to spend money on something they don't absolutely love? You'll love what you buy, how you're treated, and the way your yard an garden look and perform because we'll make sure of it.
