The McDannold Residence

THE BEFORE

After adding a large great room addition off their kitchen, the McDannolds wanted to turn their backyard into a Tuscan-inspired focal point and entertaining space. The large palladian window looked out over an existing cedar deck and modest yard space. Although the property line was fairly close, the McDannolds wanted to block views of their neighbor’s home while preserving an expansive, open feel.

THE AFTER

Brick accents in the fireplace, patio border and steps were coordinated with the original brick of the home and column light fixtures matched to existing carriage lights. LED nightlighting cast a soft glow on the space, with downlights highlighting the fireplace, bluestone patio and pathways and plantings. The proximity of the water feature and fireplace gave the McDannolds the luxury of enjoying the soothing sounds of falling water and cozy warmth and light of the fireplace. Fifteen-foot Sullivan Cypress created a green screen between the properties, but preserved an expansive view across the neighboring back lawn. The family regularly enjoys this new stylish space with family and friends as much for its expansive, picturesque view as its casual and intimate Tuscan elegance.
